Driving RSS readers to your blog

Friday, February 16th, 2007

Blogging guru Darren Rowse (Problogger) has posted ten tips for getting RSS readers to visit your blog:

  1. Actively encourage comments
  2. Show reader comment numbers
  3. Use polls
  4. Interlink posts
  5. Related posts
  6. “Best of” posts
  7. Use video
  8. RSS and bookmarking
  9. Design changes
  10. Excerpt feeds

These are some excellent tips for encouraging RSS readers to visit your blog (and see/click on your ads).  However, Darren urges some caution:

As I’ve written this post I’ve felt like making disclaimers all along the way because while the above techniques will draw readers from your RSS feed into your blog - some (or most) of them can also be sure-fire ways to become so annoying to your readers that they unsubscribe from your feed in frustration.

The easiest and “least tricky” way to to get people to visit your blog is to sent out excerpts of your feed.  This is such a common practice that people won’t be annoyed by it (although some will ask you for full feeds!).  But if you make careful and considerate use of the other methods outlines in Darren’s post, you’re bound to increase overall traffic to your blog which, in turn, with increase your ad revenue.

Good luck!
